Can a student earn AUD 1,500 a week in Australia?

Updated 10 October 2026. AUD 1,500 a week is not a guaranteed income for an international student in Australia. Whether it is achievable depends on lawful working hours, pay rates, skills and available shifts. A useful financial plan starts with a realistic income range and the cost of living in your chosen city.
Check work rights before calculating earnings
For students subject to visa condition 8105, the general limit while the course is in session is 48 hours per fortnight across jobs. Specific exceptions exist: check your grant and the Home Affairs work conditions. A second employer or an ABN does not remove visa restrictions.
An evenly split 48-hour fortnight gives 24 hours a week for budgeting. That average is not a replacement for tracking compliance by fortnight. At 24 hours, earning AUD 1,500 each week would require an average gross rate of AUD 62.50 per hour.
What does the arithmetic look like?
| Illustrative hourly rate | Weekly hours | Gross weekly income |
|---|---|---|
| AUD 30 | 24 | AUD 720 |
| AUD 40 | 24 | AUD 960 |
| AUD 62.50 | 24 | AUD 1,500 |
These are mathematical examples, not current job offers or award rates. Weekend or public-holiday penalties may change actual earnings, but they depend on the applicable employment rules. Do not budget as though every shift attracts the highest possible rate.
Use the minimum rate that applies to the job
The Fair Work Ombudsman lists the National Minimum Wage as AUD 26.44 per hour from 1 July 2026 for employees covered by that rate. Many workers are covered by an industry award or registered agreement instead. Check the occupation, classification, age, employment type and shift using Fair Work’s pay tools.
A casual hourly rate and a permanent employee’s rate should not be compared without considering their different entitlements. Ask for the terms in writing and keep payslips and your own record of hours.
Turn gross earnings into a useful budget
Separate gross pay, tax withheld, superannuation and take-home cash. Tax treatment depends on your circumstances; a student visa alone does not justify applying one tax percentage to everyone. Build a budget in Australian dollars for rent, bond, food, transport, insurance and study costs, then include a buffer for job searching and reduced shifts.
If your savings are held in another currency, use the actual transfer rate and fees when assessing how long your reserve will last. A strong exchange rate today cannot guarantee future affordability. Avoid funding a committed tuition payment with work you have not secured.
Which opportunities should you investigate?
Hospitality, retail, customer service and other roles can be worth exploring according to your experience and English. Check the commute, roster and any required training before applying. A higher hourly rate may leave less usable income if the shifts are sporadic or transport is expensive.
Can I work more during holidays? Your conditions may allow additional work when the course is not in session. Confirm the official course calendar and your visa conditions: an ordinary day without classes is not automatically a scheduled break. Is AUD 1,500 impossible? No, but it should not be presented as a typical or assured student income.
