Further Australian Student visas: 2026 onshore exceptions

Australia
Updated 10 October 2026. Renewing a Student visa means making a further application, rather than simply extending the existing grant. From 2 October 2026, a subclass 500 holder applying for another visa as the student generally needs to apply outside Australia unless an exception applies. The changes do not automatically cancel a current Student visa.
Start with your study history
Read the 2026 reform regulations alongside the instrument specifying exception classes. Relevant categories include school studies, specified government-sponsored students, doctoral study, provider default, course completion and academic progression, subject to their detailed conditions.
Enrolling in any new course does not establish an exception. Identify the principal course associated with your current visa, whether you have completed it and the level and nature of the proposed next course.
Completion and progression require different evidence
| Situation to assess | Useful evidence |
|---|---|
| More time to finish the principal course | CoE, original end date, explanation and revised completion date |
| Completed course followed by further study | Completion evidence, AQF levels and next-course details |
| Provider unable to deliver the course | Formal notification and proposed study continuation |
| Doctoral or another specified category | Documents demonstrating the relevant eligibility |
The completion category contains conditions concerning the principal course and completion within 12 months of the end date specified on the relevant CoE. Progression has separate requirements concerning completion, qualification level and the further course. A summary of these categories is not a determination that you qualify.
Review the plan before your visa expires
- Check the current grant, expiry date and conditions.
- Assemble your CoEs and academic history.
- Ask the provider to confirm completion or the additional study time required.
- Assess admission requirements and how the next course fits your academic development.
- Establish whether an onshore application is available or offshore planning is required.
Allow time for evidence gathering and decisions. There is no single planning interval that guarantees an outcome for every student. The priority is to resolve eligibility questions before you reach the end of your current permission to stay.
Review family arrangements and costs separately
The reforms also affect family inclusion, with specific exceptions and transitional arrangements. Eligibility for your own further Student visa does not automatically settle a partner’s or child’s position. Assess the complete family plan before making financial commitments.
If an offshore application is required, budget for travel, accommodation and a possible change of intake. Reconfirm insurance, official charges and provider refund terms with the responsible sources.
Does the reform invalidate my current visa? It does not automatically cancel the current grant. Is another enrolment enough? No: academic admission and visa eligibility are separate, and the application must meet the relevant requirements.
Nōmadas can assist with education planning. An authorised migration professional should assess how the exceptions apply to your circumstances.
