VET courses in Australia: requirements and planning for international students

Australia
A VET course in Australia is practical vocational education designed to develop workplace skills. For an international student, a suitable programme should fit previous education, English ability and a credible study goal. Compare the qualification, provider and visa requirements as separate parts of the decision.

What does VET mean?
VET stands for Vocational Education and Training. Qualifications include Certificate III, Certificate IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma. Providers include public TAFE institutes and independent registered training organisations. Study Australia’s VET guide explains the sector and its practical approach.
An Australian Diploma is not automatically equivalent to a university degree from your home country. Check the qualification level, learning outcomes and any occupational licensing requirements. Recognition for employment overseas is a separate question from whether a course is nationally recognised in Australia.
How to compare courses
| Your goal | Compare | Ask the provider |
|---|---|---|
| Learn practical occupational skills | Units, facilities and assessments | What tasks will I be trained to perform? |
| Build on business experience | Project, management and communication content | How does this programme build on my background? |
| Continue to further study | AQF level and formal credit agreements | Which institution confirms credit, and in writing? |
Illustrative example: an administrative professional comparing project management programmes should look at entry requirements and course units. Choosing only by the lowest instalment or the number of free days can leave important differences hidden.
Entry requirements and the student visa
- Academic background: provide the documents the institution requests, with translations where required. Entry requirements vary by qualification and provider.
- English: distinguish the provider’s admission standard from the visa evidence requirement. Accepted tests, scores, validity periods and exemptions depend on the relevant rules.
- CRICOS: check the exact course and campus on the official register for international students.
- Offer and CoE: read the enrolment agreement, refund policy and payment schedule. A Confirmation of Enrolment is evidence of enrolment, not a visa grant.
- Visa eligibility: review the subclass 500 Student visa requirements, including Genuine Student, OSHC and the financial and other evidence relevant to your application.
How much does a VET course cost?
There is no universal tuition price. Request a written quote stating the qualification, campus, intake, duration and total compulsory fees. Add enrolment fees, materials, equipment, placements where relevant, insurance, visa charges, flights and arrival costs.
Compare total costs over the same period. A lower instalment may simply be spread over a longer course. If your savings are in another currency, record the exchange rate and include transfer costs and a buffer. Do not treat expected earnings after arrival as guaranteed funding.
Ask whether the quote includes every required component and what happens financially if the visa is refused, the intake changes or you withdraw. Read the agreement before paying.
Can international VET students work?
Work rights depend on your visa conditions. The general student limit is 48 hours per fortnight while the course is in session, across all jobs. Check the official student work conditions and your provider’s academic calendar. A day without scheduled classes is not automatically an official course break.
A course does not guarantee employment, a particular wage or a later visa. Some occupations also require local licences, registration or further assessment.
Already in Australia and considering another course?
New student visa application rules took effect on 2 October 2026. Your current visa, completed studies and the specific course progression or other exception matter. Review the official instrument on eligible student classes before committing to a new enrolment. A provider’s offer cannot establish onshore visa eligibility on its own.
Frequently asked questions
Is VET the same as university?
No. Compare the qualification level and learning outcomes. Credit towards a degree must be confirmed through an actual arrangement.
Can I study English before VET?
English preparation may be suitable, but the proposed study sequence must meet admission and visa rules. Your application location also matters under the current framework.
Which Australian city should I choose?
Compare course availability, housing, transport and support in each city using the same study period. Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Perth offer different practical trade-offs.
