Australia Working Holiday proposals: regional fees explained

Updated 10 October 2026. A new political proposal has drawn attention to regional Working Holiday arrangements in Australia. For travellers, the first question is whether a news story describes an idea, enacted legislation or a rule that has already commenced. Those categories have different consequences for your plans.
What does the proposal say?
In its 6 October 2026 migration policy announcement, the Liberal–National Coalition proposed higher Working Holiday Maker visa fees with an exemption for regional areas. It also proposed other changes to the program. The relevant source is the Coalition’s policy statement.
This is an opposition proposal. The announcement itself does not create an available discount, amend an individual’s visa or establish a new regional definition. Any implementation would need to be assessed against the official instruments and commencement dates.
Check your subclass and passport
The Working Holiday Maker program includes different visa subclasses and country arrangements. Conditions reported for one passport do not automatically apply to another. Brazilian passport holders, for example, should investigate the Work and Holiday subclass 462 rather than treating all Working Holiday information as interchangeable.
Use Home Affairs for eligibility requirements and, where relevant, the country-cap status. Check current availability before committing to flights or non-refundable services. Your age, qualifications, language evidence and application history may affect the applicable requirements.
Evaluate regional work beyond the visa headline
A regional job needs to make sense as employment as well as a possible component of a travel plan. Compare wages, accommodation, transport, expected hours and the length of the engagement. Ask who employs you, what deductions apply and how work records are provided.
Marketing language such as regional, rural or farm work is not enough to prove that a job meets a particular visa requirement. Verify the activity, location and relevant dates against the rules for your subclass. Keep evidence of the actual work performed.
A practical way to assess the next announcement
- Identify the source and whether the measure is proposed or in force.
- Check which visas, passports and application dates it covers.
- Look for commencement and transitional arrangements.
- Update your budget using verified costs rather than predicted savings.
Can I claim the regional exemption now? The policy announcement cited here is not evidence that such an exemption is currently available. Will regional work guarantee another visa? No. A further application depends on the rules and your individual eligibility. Should I change employers because of this proposal? Assess the actual job and current conditions before making a decision based on a future policy.
