Before you start
From Certificate III to your first role: compare courses, understand placements and prepare to work in early childhood education in Australia.
Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care is a common starting point for studying childcare in Australia. A Diploma can be your next step. If you are coming on a student visa, check that your provider and course are registered on CRICOS, that you meet the entry requirements and that you can complete placements. Starting work also depends on your work rights and child safety requirements.
If you enjoy helping children learn, this training may suit you. The daily routine combines play, care, observation and communication with families. This guide will help you compare courses and prepare your next steps, using information checked on 2 November 2026.
What childcare involves and which roles you can do
Here, childcare means early childhood education and care. An early childhood educator supports learning experiences, meals and rest, observes development and works with the team. Keeping records and following safety procedures are also part of the role, so confidence communicating in English matters.
There is a distinction between an educator and an early childhood teacher. The Department of Education identifies Certificate III and Diploma pathways for educators; a teacher needs an approved higher education qualification. A Diploma does not automatically provide that university-level qualification.
Certificate III or Diploma: choosing your course
The national qualification codes below were current when checked. A CRICOS code identifies a provider’s registered course offering and is different from the national qualification code.
| Course | Purpose | Placement |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate III · CHC30125 | Entry-level educator training covering care, learning and teamwork. | At least 160 hours in a regulated Australian service. |
| Diploma · CHC50125 | Develops planning skills and educational responsibilities. Check its entry requirements. | At least 280 hours in a regulated Australian service. |
Sources: official CHC30125 and CHC50125 qualification records. Diploma entry commonly requires an accepted Certificate III; providers must assess any alternative entry pathway. Do not assume direct entry or that the same placement hours can be counted towards both courses.
Duration depends on the provider and timetable. For example, TAFE NSW lists one year for its international Certificate III and two years for the combined Certificate III and Diploma package. If a website still shows CHC30121 or CHC50121, ask how transition to the current qualification works and which code will appear in your offer.
Requirements for international students
- Admission and English. Ask about the institution’s age, education, language and skills assessment requirements. There is no single IELTS score for every provider. As one example, KKTC’s international handbook specifies age 18 and IELTS Academic 6.0 with no band below 5.5, or accepted alternatives.
- Registered course. Search CRICOS for the institution, course and location. Match the details against your offer.
- Visa and personal circumstances. Academic admission does not replace your visa assessment. Check Home Affairs requirements and conditions and retain your documents.
- Child safety clearance. Confirm the check needed in the state or territory where you will study and work. NSW uses the Working with Children Check; the category must match your activity.
- Placement preparation. Ask about first aid, child safety and child protection training, plus any service requirements. ACECQA publishes the national child safety training requirements, updated in 2026.
Your English needs to work outside an exam room. You will need to follow instructions, describe incidents and speak with families. If you need preparation, ask the provider about an English course before the qualification and make sure the complete study plan fits your circumstances.
How much does a childcare course cost?
Fees vary by provider, location and intake. These published international student examples help you compare options; your written offer will confirm your own fees and conditions.
| Program | Published duration | Course fee |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate III | 1 year | A$12,500–13,750 |
| Certificate III + Diploma | 2 years | A$29,500–31,820 for the package |
Budget separately for OSHC, your visa, housing, transport, checks, materials and any uniforms. Placement can reduce the time available for another job, so leave room in your budget for those weeks. Avoid relying on income from a job you have not secured.
Use our Australia trip cost calculator as a starting point, then replace estimates with your own quotes. Request the payment schedule, refund policy and any charges for reassessment or changing intake.
Placements and working while studying
A placement and a paid job are separate arrangements. Before enrolling, establish who finds the placement, where it may be, its timetable and how your hours are assessed. Do not assume it is paid or will lead to a job offer.
In certain centre-based services, ACECQA allows a person to count towards Certificate III staffing requirements while actively working towards an approved qualification. They must have started, remain enrolled and make satisfactory progress, with appropriate evidence available to the service. The same provision does not apply to new family day care educators, who need the completed qualification.
For a Student visa subclass 500, the general limit is 48 hours of work per fortnight while your course is in session, with specific exceptions. Unlimited hours are permitted during scheduled course breaks; ordinarily, you cannot start work before your course begins.
Condition 8105 includes an exception for a work component specified as a course requirement when the course is registered on CRICOS. Calling something a placement is not enough: ask the provider to confirm how your program qualifies and check your own conditions in VEVO.

How much do childcare educators earn?
Pay depends on classification, duties, experience and the applicable employment instrument. As a reference, the Children’s Services Award MA000120 lists these minimum rates from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2026:
| Classification | Base hourly rate |
|---|---|
| Level 1 · entry level, subject to specified duties and experience | A$28.81 |
| Level 3 · classification with an approved Certificate III | A$32.47 |
| Level 5 · classification with the specified Diploma or equivalent | A$36.57 |
These are not take-home amounts or job offers. The award provides a 25% casual loading; penalties, agreements and other rules may also apply. This table excludes junior, apprentice and traineeship rates. Check the vacancy’s classification and current pay calculation before accepting.
How to start looking for childcare work
- Choose a city and check your availability. Put classes, placement, travel time and visa conditions into one schedule. Focus on shifts you can reliably attend.
- Gather your documents. Prepare enrolment or qualification evidence, progress records where relevant, required checks and useful certificates. Ask permission before sharing a referee’s contact details.
- Tailor your CV to the role. Describe training, languages and experience with specific examples. Be clear about your availability and the qualification you are completing.
- Search for roles at your level. Read educator and casual educator vacancies carefully to see whether applicants still studying are eligible. Check service providers’ own career pages too.
- Prepare for interviews. Practise explaining an activity, a conflict or a safety situation. Ask about supervision, induction, pay classification and shifts.
Making good use of placement can give you examples to discuss in interviews and potential referees, if they agree. Each employer makes its own hiring decisions; building experience takes time.
What to ask before booking your course
Create a comparison sheet for each provider with six items: CRICOS code and campus, entry requirements, dates and attendance, itemised total fees, placement arrangements and change policies. Add one practical question: what evidence of progress will you provide for a potential employer? This helps you compare what you receive as well as the advertised price.

Frequently asked questions about studying childcare in Australia
Do I need experience to study childcare?
Not always. Certificate III is a common starting point. Your provider will assess its entry requirements and your ability to complete study and placement. Previous experience can help, but it does not replace required checks.
Can I work before completing Certificate III?
In certain services, yes, if you meet ACECQA’s conditions for actively working towards the qualification. You also need work rights, applicable checks and an employer able to hire you for that role.
Does a Diploma qualify me as an early childhood teacher?
Not by itself. Early childhood educator and early childhood teacher are different roles. A teacher needs an approved higher education qualification and must meet any applicable registration requirements.
Are placements paid?
Not necessarily. Ask the provider to confirm in writing how placements are arranged and whether any payment applies. A compulsory placement does not automatically come with an employment contract.
Can I study childcare with basic English?
You must meet your institution’s entry requirement and communicate safely with children, families and colleagues. If you are not there yet, ask about English preparation and check the entry conditions for the complete study pathway.
Is a Working with Children Check valid across Australia?
Do not assume it is. Each state or territory has its own system. Confirm the clearance you need for study, placements and paid work in your chosen location.
Does studying childcare guarantee a job or residency?
No. Hiring depends on the role and your profile, while migration pathways have separate requirements that can change. Choose a course that suits your career goals and discuss migration matters with an authorised professional.
