Before you start
Preparing for GS starts with a clear explanation of why the course makes sense for your background. See what official guidance asks for and organise your answers using truthful information and relevant documents.

What is the Genuine Student requirement?
Genuine Student, or GS, is a Department of Home Affairs requirement for student visa applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024. It assesses whether the applicant genuinely intends to study in Australia. Applications lodged before that date remain subject to the GTE criterion that applied when they were submitted.
The assessment considers circumstances and evidence together. It is not simply an exercise in persuasive writing: the study plan needs to be truthful, understandable and supported by relevant information.
Which questions do you need to answer?
- Your current circumstances, including family, community, employment and economic ties.
- Why you chose this course, provider and Australia, including your understanding of the course requirements and of studying and living in Australia.
- How completing the course will benefit you.
- Other relevant information you want to provide.
Official guidance allows up to 150 words for each response, in English. There is an additional question for applicants who previously held a student visa or apply in Australia from a non-student visa. Check the fields that apply to your situation in the application form.
Home Affairs prefers responses in the application-form fields rather than a separate GS statement. Supporting documents are attached through ImmiAccount.
How to connect answers to evidence
| Topic | Information to organise | Writing considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Previous study | Academic history, qualifications and their relationship to the proposed course. | Explain changes of field using your own reasons. |
| Work and current circumstances | Experience, duties and context that help explain your circumstances. | Do not invent employment, income or ties. |
| Course and provider | Content, requirements, duration and research behind your choice. | Describe a specific decision rather than general praise for the country. |
| Expected benefit | Links to skills, career and actual goals. | Distinguish an expectation from a guaranteed outcome. |
This is a way to organise your thinking, not a complete mandatory document list. Official guidance gives more weight to statements supported by evidence; the checklist and application requests determine what to submit.
A five-step preparation process
- Read the official page and identify the questions that apply.
- Organise facts and documents before writing.
- Explain the course and its benefit in terms specific to your background.
- Review consistency, word limits and alignment with the attachments.
- Check the final form and the requirements shown in the application.
Avoid copying another person’s template. A short, specific answer grounded in facts is more useful than elaborate wording that does not explain your choice. If information changes, review the answer and related documents.
What if I have longer-term plans?
Official guidance recognises that genuine students may develop skills Australia needs and later seek permanent residence. That future intention does not, by itself, count against an applicant under GS. The application still needs to show that study is the primary reason for seeking a student visa. No course or GS response guarantees an immigration outcome.

Frequently asked questions
Are GS and GTE the same thing?
No. GS replaced GTE for student visa applications lodged from 23 March 2024. The application date matters.
Do I need to write in English?
Yes. Official guidance requires answers in English, with a maximum of 150 words per question.
Do I need a separate GS letter?
Home Affairs prefers responses in the form fields. Also check the specific instructions and attachments requested in your application.
Can I use a ready-made answer?
A generic answer may not explain your circumstances and does not replace evidence. Base the response on true facts about your background.
Does planning future residency mean refusal?
The official page says that future intention does not count against a student by itself. The application must still satisfy GS and other applicable requirements.
Does meeting GS guarantee a visa?
No. GS is one requirement within a process involving other conditions and an authority decision.
