Context for your decision
What is it like to live and study in Christchurch?
Christchurch, also called Ōtautahi, is a base for studying on the South Island and exploring Canterbury in your free time. The centre, university neighbourhoods and coast offer different experiences.
The campus address is crucial. CCEL, for example, lists its location in Ilam, around the University of Canterbury; living in the centre does not mean your school is next door.
It may suit you if you want a South Island city with parks, student life and activities around Canterbury.

Everyday life
Your weekly spending
Separate groceries, eating out, laundry and leisure. In a homestay, confirm which meals are covered each day of the week.

Separate study and work permission
Working while studying in Christchurch
Some student visas allow up to 25 hours of work per week during classes. For English courses, eligibility depends on the provider and duration. Check the written conditions of your visa before accepting work.
Permission to work does not guarantee a job. Prepare your initial budget without relying on income you do not yet have.
