A common route to studying cookery in Australia is the Certificate III in Commercial Cookery (SIT30821), a vocational qualification focused on professional kitchen work. Kitchen Management or Hospitality Management may follow, depending on your goals. Fees, duration and entry requirements vary by provider. International students also need to check CRICOS registration and the relevant visa requirements.

You might already enjoy cooking, have professional experience or be considering a career change while living overseas. This guide helps you compare courses, understand a quote and ask useful questions before you enrol.

Which Australian cookery course should you choose?

Culinary courses range from short recreational workshops to vocational qualifications. In Australia's VET system, check the qualification name and national code to understand the training on offer.

Certificate IV in Kitchen Management · SIT40521Kitchen production and supervision alongside culinary skills.Entry requirements, recognised units and duration after a Certificate III.
Diploma of Hospitality Management · SIT50422Managing hospitality operations and teams. The pathway's specialisation and included cookery training.

You do not automatically need every level. Beginners can start by comparing practical foundations; experienced applicants can ask about recognition of prior learning (RPL), which requires assessment. Job advertisements use both cook and chef: read the responsibilities rather than assuming the labels are interchangeable.

How much does it cost to study cookery in Australia?

Fees depend on the qualification, provider and your eligibility. These published examples illustrate different budgets. They are not Nōmadas quotes or a school ranking. All amounts are Australian dollars (AUD).

Entry requirements, English and the student visa

Course admission and visa approval are separate processes. Providers may set academic, age, English and document requirements. For a specific example, TAFE SA lists Academic IELTS 6.0 with no band below 5.0, or equivalent, and satisfactory Year 10 equivalence for its Certificate III. Other institutions set their own criteria.

Think beyond the test score: kitchen English includes following instructions, explaining allergens and coordinating during service. If you need preparation, ask the school which English pathways it accepts before booking a course.

  • Provider and programme: check international registration on CRICOS.
  • Visa documents: check CoE, OSHC and application requirements with Home Affairs, Student visa 500.
  • Already in Australia: check your current visa and whether you can lodge the next application onshore before paying for further study.

Our guide to studying in Australia puts these decisions into a wider study plan. Enrolment does not guarantee a visa or permanent residency.

The abbreviations explained: VET means vocational education and training; CRICOS is the register of providers and courses for international students; CoE means Confirmation of Enrolment; OSHC means Overseas Student Health Cover.

Practical classes and cookery placements

Look for opportunities to practise preparation, storage, teamwork and service alongside theory. Ask for an actual weekly timetable covering campus attendance, kitchen classes, independent study and external placement. It will help you plan transport and work availability.

  • Who finds the placement and supervises you?
  • How many hours or services does this programme require, and when?
  • Is it paid, and what transport or uniform costs will you have?
  • How is completion documented, and what happens if you have not found a placement?

Do not assume any activity called a placement is exempt from your visa's work limit. Its treatment depends on the registered course requirements. Confirm the details with the school and official guidance.

Working while studying and starting in a kitchen

For students covered by the general visa 500 limit, the rule is 48 hours per fortnight while the course is in session, with different conditions during scheduled breaks. Check your own conditions and when work can begin in the official Study Australia guide.

When checking pay, identify the duties, classification, age where relevant, employment type and shifts in the Fair Work pay calculator. There is no single “student chef” rate.

Your first role may involve kitchen support rather than the position you hope to reach after training. Prepare a clear CV, explain your availability and keep examples of your practical skills. Employment depends on your profile and the employer; build your budget without relying on a job you have not secured.

Choosing a school and city

Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide may suit different plans. Start with the campus and your weekly routine: where are the training kitchens, how will you travel from home and what attendance is required? A city's name alone does not guarantee work.

  1. Check the training: qualification, CRICOS, facilities and placement support.
  2. Compare full costs: use the same duration, inclusions and conditions.
  3. Plan daily life: transport, rent and study time.
  4. Get written confirmation: dates, places, admission and policies before payment.

Frequently asked questions about studying cookery in Australia

Can I study cookery without previous experience?

Some entry programmes accept applicants without professional experience. You still need to meet academic and English requirements. If you already work in a kitchen, ask about an assessment of prior learning.

How long is a cookery course in Australia?

The Certificate III examples in this guide last 52 weeks. A package with further qualifications may take two years or longer. Check teaching weeks, holidays and placements for the specific programme.

Is Commercial Cookery the same as a chef course?

Commercial Cookery refers to professional culinary training. “Chef course” is a broader label: compare the qualification, national code and competencies rather than relying on a marketing name.

Do I need Certificate III, Certificate IV and a Diploma?

Not necessarily. They have different training focuses. Your pathway depends on your starting point, admission requirements and the responsibilities you want to learn. Ask the provider to explain each recommended level.

What is the cheapest cookery course?

There is no single price. Compare quotes with matching duration and onshore or offshore eligibility, including enrolment, materials and placements. The published figures here are examples rather than personalised offers.

Are cookery placements paid?

It depends on the arrangement and programme. Ask in writing who organises the placement, whether it is paid, which expenses you cover and how it relates to your visa conditions.

Can I study cookery with basic English?

You must meet your provider's admission requirements and understand classes and safety instructions. If you need preparation, ask which English pathway the institution accepts.

Does studying cookery guarantee a job or permanent residency?

No. A course provides training; recruitment and migration processes have separate requirements. Seek an authorised professional for advice about visa options in your individual circumstances.
